Introduction to Ice Climbing Course in Ouray, CO
This is the program we recommend for first time ice climbers. These courses take place in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, home to some of the best ice climbing in the lower 48. Our 2 Day Intro to Ice Climbing is the best way to become a proficient ice climber in a short period of time. Our guides will work with you over these two days with the goal being to create a confident and well-rounded climber. We begin on low angled terrain and venture onto steeper terrain as climbers' comfort levels increase. Instruction will focus on standard ice climbing equipment and its use, proper technique (body positioning, footwork, tool placement), and belaying and rappelling for ice climbers.
*New for 2012/2013 in addtion to our popular weekend (Saturday/Sunday) courses, we are also offering Thursday/Friday intro course itineraries so that you can avoid the weekend crowds in the Ouray Ice Park or combine this with our weekend Intermediate Course.
*We offer low client-to-guide ratios on this course (4:1) to make certain that you receive the most personalized instruction available to aid in your progression as an aspiring ice climber.
These are great programs for gaining technical skills and confidence on alpine ice terrain. We consider them essential training if you are considering a climb on the West Rib of Mt. McKinley, an ascent of Mt. Rainier’s Liberty Ridge, or if you just want to have a fun couple of days swinging your ice tools this winter.
The guides enjoy teaching people how to climb, not just how to follow a guide all day. Climbing movement and technique, gear use, and decision making are all taught and tailored to an individual’s pace.
