Women's Backpacking and Yoga Trip in the San Juan Mountains

If you always wanted to go backpacking in the rugged mountains of Colorado but never knew where to start, then this is your chance to learn from the pros! Southwest Adventure Guides is proud to team up with Cheryl Albrecht-Harvey and Sheryl McGourty, who combine 25 years of outdoor education experience and yoga instruction, to offer this one-of-a-kind backcountry adventure for women. We conduct our backpacking adventure in the remote and beautiful Weminuche Wilderness of the San Juan Mountains. At over 500,000 acres, the Weminuche is Colorado's largest wilderness area, so it's sure to make you feel like you're truly "out there". Along the way, you'll acquire basic wilderness skills such as how to properly pack a backpack for a multi-day trip, backcountry cooking, campsite selection, map reading and wilderness navigtaion, and much much more. In addition, those who are interested will get the opportunity to do yoga in an incredible mountain setting, and climb a 14'er! What more can you ask for in a backpacking trip!!

Sample Itinerary

Day 0: We meet at the Southwest Adventure Guides' office in the afternoon or early evening in order to go over equipment, food, and logistics issues for the following morning. This is an opportunity for everyone to get the chance to meet prior to the start of the trip.

Day 1: We will meet at the Southwest Adventure Guides' office at 7:30 am and then proceed to the Durango and Silverton Railroad Station where we board the historic Narrow Gauge Train. We ride the narrow gauge train to the Needleton stop, where our trek will begin. After adjusting our packs and preparing to hike we begin by hiking up Needle creek to a creek side camp in a beautiful, open alpine meadow in the Chicago Basin.

Day 2: Today we'll have the opportunity to explore Chicago Basin and the Twin Lakes area, and potentially hike a 14'er, Windom Peak (14,083 ft.) if weather allows. There will also be a few opportunities to do yoga. A great day in one of Colorado's most beautiful areas.

Day 3: On our final day we'll hike to the top of Columbine Pass in the morning to enjoy some incredible scenery then pack up and hike out via the Needle Creek Trail where we'll eventually meet up with the train at Needleton and the finish of our trek. What a trip!
