General Information

Our ice courses are taught at the Ouray Ice Park, Silverton's Eureka Canyon, and Durango's Cascade Canyon, home to some of the best ice climbing terrain in North America. Our courses and seminars focus on helping a prospective ice climber gain experience and competence on ice in the most efficient manner. Our expert guides will focus the instruction on the latest skills and techniques used to safely, efficiently, and competently climb waterfall ice. Mental attitude and commitment level are also important topics that are thoroughly addressed on our courses.

Course Descriptions

Introduction to Ice Climbing: 2 Days

Our introductory progression is the best way to become a proficient ice climber in a short period of time. Unmatched terrain in an unmatched setting provide an excellent forum to introduce the basic principles of ice climbing. Instruction will focus on standard ice climbing equipment and it's use, proper technique (body positioning, footwork, tool placement), and mental attitude. We also teach belaying and rappelling as they apply to ice climbing. Course Location: Durango and Ouray.

Steep Ice Course: 2 Days

Our intermediate course builds upon the skills learned in a basic ice course. We introduce and teach the techniques used to efficiently climb steep ice (WI 4-5), as well as the more advanced topics of ice screw placement, anchor construction, and lead climbing. We will also cover topics such as avalanche awareness for ice climbers and strategies, and tools for multi-pitch ice climbing. Many of those who complete this course elect to stay an extra day or two to tackle some of the area's backcountry classics! Course Location: Durango and Ouray.

Lead Climbing Seminar: 4 Days

Our advanced course is intended for those who have already completed our basic and intermediate progression, or those who have previous ice climbing experience. The goal of this course is to help you attain proficiency as an ice leader and multi-pitch climber. Course topics will include a thorough review of ice screw placement and protection, avalanche awareness, steep ice technique, and more. Course Location: Ouray and Silverton.
